Bushfires continue, current death tole 128..

Monday, February 9th, 2009

I am listening to the radio and people of parliament offering their condolences and words of encouragement. Plans on how to rebuild the destroyed communities are being discussed. And people who are caught lighting fires on purpose, will be charged on account of murder.

Ash Wednesday occurred around the time I was born. So I have no recollection of the event and the ash that covered everything, even in inner city suburbs like Clifton Hill. (Where I spent the first few years of my life.) It is interesting that being so close to the bushlands that are burning, I have very little knowledge of what I should do in a situation like that, yet alone find out information and how I can help anyone.
The juxtaposition (yes, I am using that word) between inner city and outer city living is a bit of a joke really. I don’t think people are taught much knowledge in the way of living anymore. For example, people do not seem to comprehend the importance of total fire ban days. And the devastation that a single cigarette can have on the country. There was one fire in particular that is said to have been started by a cigarette… This makes little sense to me. Apart from the simple little fact that it is littering.
I have never seen friends and family shaken up so much by an event. I guess I am from a pretty sheltered generation. I know we are in a time of war too, but we no longer deal with that face to face. We deal with it through television, movies and the internet, if we so choose too. This, people can’t ignore. It affects people we know and has taken so many lives, not to mention homes, livestock. I hope people give. I hope the government helps the people that have lost their families, friends, homes, towns. This is truly a surreal time and I, as everyone else, send my thoughts to those that are doing all their best to combat the fires.

Bushfires in Victoria 2009

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

I am worried about people, I am sure a lot of people are.. Here is an amazing blog that links to maps and live broadcasts to update everyone on what is going on and how to try and track down their loved ones..

Bushfires
Apparently, the death toll and loss of homes is higher than that of Ash Wednesday and Black Friday.
Lots of beloved Victorian towns are lost.

Nom Kinnear King

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Another of my favorite artists, Nom Kinnear King, is having a show in March in London, which I am lucky enough to be attend while I am abroad.  It will be held at Utrophia, located at 136 Tanners Hill, Deptford SE8 4QD on the 20th of March, 6 til 9. The show runs until the 3rd of April.

Nom was in Melbourne last year and I had the chance of meeting her and going to her solo show at 696. (I believe she will be back again later this year)
Check out her mypsace too.

This site contains artwork from some of the most talented people around the world. There is also news updates, information, forums, a shop; where you can purchase limited edition prints and books. There is also an online art gallery, which gives people the lucky opportunity to view some of this amazing work. This site includes some of my favorite artists such as Laurie Lipton, Beau White, Hector Javier Ramirez, Karl PerssonMark Ryden just to name a few.

You can find it here: beinArt.org
This site is updated regularly, so keep an eye on it so you don’t miss out on the amazing work that is on it.
I am lucky enough to have my own gallery on the site.
You can have a look here: Lily Mae Martin on beinArt.org
Jon Beinart, founder of this website, also publishes books that contain a collection of works by selected  artists. So far there have been two books published. They are titled Metamorphsis 1 and Metamorphsis 2. They are available in stores and online. (The second of these books contains some sculptors too, which I am impressed about as I find it is an art form that does not receive the level of recognition a painting does. ) These books are definitely worth taking a look at too, I can’t wait for the third edition!!
